Dear CHHS-MAHS Alumni Family and Friends,

WOW!!!  Can you believe we are on our way to celebrate another TANTALIZING reunion? It is the essence of time that is so precious.

As your Chairperson for the 2018 Alumni Reunion, I am especially grateful, and appreciative for your continuing support and your trust in the reunion committee as we plan a BEDAZZLEOUS reunion for you.  I vow to remain humble, provide quality leadership, compassion and commitment. Our mission is to implement an exciting successful reunion.  As a legendary alumni, you deserve the best we can provide you. We look forward to welcoming you back as we celebrate the last two graduating classes of CHHS-MAHS with a GRAND SLAM Sixteenth Biennial Reunion. This will be a fantastic Labor Day weekend, August 31 thru September 3, 2018 in Hamlet, N.C. It will be festive, interesting and full of excitement for your enjoyment.

Although the plans are not final, we decided to set the mood thru the sultry voice of Barry White.  Ladies and Gentlemen, let us be the one to entertain you by introducing the 2018 reunion theme “Our First, Our Last, Our Everything”. We feel very confident that this will be the most GRAN-DI-NIZED reunion of all.

Friday Night

‘Our First’ - The first CHHS-MAHS Reunion was held September 2-4, 1988. It drew a large gathering of Alumni and friends estimated to be close to 500. It brought groups from several schools in Hamlet NC. These schools included Capitol Highway, Pine Street, East Hamlet and Monroe Avenue. CHHS was erected in 1926 and celebrated its first graduating class in 1929 with eight graduates. The reunion celebrated the schools and their commitment to providing education in the Black community during a time when White America thought education was wasted on Black people. ‘Our First’ (class/educators) gave us the foundation we needed to set in motion the drive for equal rights.

Saturday Night

‘Our Last’ - This year, the CHHS-MAHS Reunion will celebrate the last graduation class (1968) of Monroe Avenue High School. The Class of 1968 celebrates its 50th class reunion this year. As in past reunions, the celebrating class will share the “Lime Light” with the Class of 1967 who are celebrating their 51st year. These classes, as well as previous classes, exemplify the ‘Blood, Sweat and Tears’ that our educators, administrators and community shed for us. Their efforts were not in vain.  Just look around, the proof is in the pudding - YOU!

‘Our Everything’ - As we look back over our history, rich in Love and Sacrifice, we see the resilience of our culture and people. While we have celebrated our first and last graduation class, we are in no way signaling an end to the recognition you so rightly deserve. We continue to push forward and give back to our community which in our past gave us her all.  In the end, no person is an island, we are all linked forever through our childhoods and common experiences. Our history has shown we are a great people nurtured by the love of family, friends, community and school. For you, Capital Highway and Monroe Avenue, truly are “Our Everything”.

We will worship with St. Stephen’s AME Zion Church and its congregation.  Our speaker is a member of the 1968 celebrating class.  We will  present a special monetary love gift to the church from the CHHS-MAHS Alumni.

The reunion committee is looking for volunteers for a choir for our Sunday Morning church service as well as someone who has experience in directing a choir, plays a piano or organ.  We know we have a lot of talented alumni who sing like Angels, so come join the CHHS-MAHS 2018 Reunion Choir.

Candidates for choir directing should contact Gloris Butler by January 30, 2018. Choir participants should contact Gloris by April 1, 2018.

We welcomed your feedback from the 2016 reunion. Your comments are very important to us and we’ve made every effort to address them appropriately.

Hopefully, the experience of this weekend will exceed your expectation and that you will feel very proud to be a member of the CHHS-MAHS family.

In 2016, we published an alumni cookbook which contained many delicious recipes and it sold out. In addition, we donated $1000.00 to the Dobbins Heights Community Center to be used in the construction of a memorial brick walkway. Through the Dobbins Heights Community Center you will be able to purchase bricks inscribed with words of your choosing, i.e.,  “In Loving Memory of John Doe, Class of 1929.”  The cost per brick is $150.00. Other than giving a donation for the walkway, the  CHHS-MAHS Reunion Committee has nothing to do with the walkway and would ask that all questions and comments be referred to the Dobbins Heights Community Center.

This year we are stepping out and doing something that has never been done in the history of the CHHS-MAHS Alumni reunion.  We wanted to do something special for our 2018 reunion project and is consistent with our goal of ‘Giving Back To The Community which is ‘Our Everything’. This year we are extending the weekend activities thru Labor Day with a fun filled community cookout at Dobbins Heights Community Center (formerly the home of Capital Highway High School). There will be good food, music, and great fellowship. Hopefully, as you plan your trip, please consider joining us Monday, September 3rd for this special memorable occasion. The cookout is open to the public and free of charge.

Again we will be publishing a souvenir book with Memorial and Advertisement pages. If you are submitting a picture, be sure the picture is very clear. The sizes for the Memorial and Advertisement pages will be: Full Page ($100.00), 1/2 Page ($50.00) and 1/4 Page ($25.00). All photos will be handled with care and returned to the sender.
